Soil and Water are the key natural resources for the sustainability of flora and fauna and environmental system. But unfortunately, they are being used unwisely, resulting in a threat to the sustainability of agriculture and the environment. So far, in Pakistan enormous sums of money are spent on the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of farm irrigation systems, but many have failed to meet the planned agricultural and social objectives. It has now been recognized that one of the main reasons for this is the lack of human resources with the proper technical and managerial skills needed to install, operate, and manage the schemes successfully. Keeping in view the importance of technical education in Land and Water Resources Management, Department of Land and Water Management was established in December 1985 in the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering to produce graduates with technical expertise in the management of land and water resources. This department offers postgraduate degree programs of M.E and Ph.D. in Land and Water Management.
The department imparts quality education to the students through a wide range of subjects and research to enhance the productivity of land and water resources to meet future demands of food and fiber. In addition, the department also provides trainings and advisory services to the farming community of the country. The department plays a leading role in imparting quality education in the field of soil and water conservation and management. The mission of the department is to produce highly motivated and talented professional engineers with expertise in the field of soil and water resources conservation and management.
The department has well-equipped lab with the latest equipment used for land surveying and leveling, soil and water testing, and watercourse design and construction. Several graduates did M.E and Ph.D. degrees from this department The department imparts quality education to the students through a wide range of subjects and research to enhance the productivity of land and water resources to meet future demands of food and fiber. The vision of the Department of Land and Water Management is to lead at national and international in advancing the understanding and stewardship of Land and water resources. The Department shall be center of excellence in the study of Land and water management and in the application of knowledge to the solution of agricultural, natural resources, and particularly the land and water use problems. The Department shall be a premier learning center in soil and water sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and will adapt to the changing demographics and educational needs of students. This includes meeting the professional needs of students on campus and place-bound students (using a distance education program). The Department is committed to transferring research findings through its extension programs to appropriate audiences (e.g., farmers, regulatory decision-makers, policymakers, legislators, classroom students and scientists) to ensure their application to critical problems. The Department is committed to maintaining an active outreach program by offering relevant short courses to soil and water professionals. The Department shall work to actively seek the input of clientele through formal and informal approaches, including deriving the expertise and insight of an external advisory panel or panels. Deliver highly visible teaching and research programs that have deep, lasting impacts. The resultant goal of the department is to produce highly motivated and talented professional engineers with expertise in the field of soil and water resources conservation and management.
In the near future, the department will be going to be the Center of excellence in water and agricultural land resources engineering and management under which modern engineering techniques such as GIS and remote sensing, smart water management as well as high efficiency water management units will be established to boost up the crop water productivity with less use of water. Modern water management farms are under consideration for the demonstration that line departments and the farming community may get benefit by observing their highly efficient results.
